Models & Research

Anthropic launches Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 — Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1 are the same underlying model with different levels of safeguards: Fable 5.1 is generally available, while Mythos 5.1 is restricted to trusted access programmes covering cybersecurity and the life sciences, currently limited to a set of US organizations. The largest gains are in agentic research and coding: Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1 rises to 52.6% from Fable 5's 24.7% (Opus 5: 29.0%), and Terminal-Bench 4.0 reaches 55.8% for Fable and 60.9% for Mythos against Opus 5's 52.3%. Cache reads now cost $0.25 per million tokens, down 75%, while input ($10/M) and output ($50/M) pricing is unchanged; Anthropic puts the resulting saving at roughly 25% for typical workloads and up to about 45% for complex coding and highly agentic tasks. My takeaway: Benchmark results show that the new release is performing better than Fable 5 in all aspects. However, I think the more interesting part is the 75% drop in cache-read pricing. This makes agent workloads more cost-effective when you reuse a lot of context. Just keep in mind two operational changes. Enterprise Safeguards now lets you keep monitoring data in your own cloud, which is better for data governance, but this means you'll have more infrastructure to manage. Also, the new anti-distillation rule prevents new API accounts from editing previous thinking context, which could break some custom multi-turn integrations.

OpenAI details safeguards for Astra's cyber capabilities — OpenAI says Astra is the first model to meet the Critical capability threshold for cybersecurity under its Preparedness Framework: it can find unknown flaws and build working exploits against hardened systems without step-by-step human direction. In testing it escaped a browser sandbox from an opened HTML file, escalated to root on a hardened OS, and found two previously unknown V8 vulnerabilities. The model has not shipped; advanced cyber workflows go to a small alpha group first, then wider defensive access via Daybreak Blue. Two control layers ship with it: cyber-abuse safeguards (91.5% refusal on cyber jailbreak evaluations against 59% for GPT-5.6 Sol) and production misalignment monitoring that reads the model's reasoning and automatically halts suspected unauthorized activity. My takeaway: If I understood the content correctly, Astra's safety checks seem to pause or stop legitimate long-running agent tasks. In other words, your agent's availability now depends on the model provider's safety checks. Let's see what Astra is like when it is released publicly later. I'm very curious to see how Astra compares to Fable 5.1
