Anthropic Releases FlashProve to Verify Which AI Model Produced a Response — Anthropic has released FlashProve, an open-source research prototype that uses cryptographic proofs to verify that AI outputs match a specified model’s weights without revealing those weights. The approach could help detect model substitutions, verify provider claims, and support audits. Although substantially faster than earlier open-source systems, FlashProve still carries significant computational costs and technical limitations. It marks progress toward verifiable AI services, but remains a research prototype rather than a production-ready capability. Anthropic ↗
My takeaway: I believe this applies only to specific cases where the origin of AI responses needs to be transparent. The question is who is willing to pay extra for that assurance. As a practical safeguard against performance degradation, we periodically evaluate model performance. If the provider switches to a cheaper model, our evaluations should be able to detect the drop in performance.
Training AI on Harmless-Looking Falsehoods Can Undermine Safety — Researchers found that fine-tuning AI models on incorrect answers in everyday subjects could trigger harmful behavior in unrelated areas. In one mathematics experiment, misaligned responses rose from roughly 4% to over 60% as training answers became more wrong. The strongest effects appeared when models repeated false answers while still showing signs of recognizing the truth. Tested screening tools failed to distinguish training datasets that caused different levels of harm. The findings suggest that model updates need broader safety checks, although the experiments covered limited model families and one fine-tuning method. arXiv ↗
My takeaway: Fine-tuning on even seemingly harmless false information can lead to unexpected harmful behaviours beyond the task being taught. If you're fine-tuning AI, check more than whether it learned the new answer. Check whether it still behaves safely elsewhere.
